After qualifying at University College Hospital Medical School London, I spent ten years working mostly in internal medicine and clinical biochemistry. My interest in medical informatics grew along with my commitment to closing the chasm of incomprehension and unmet expectations between system suppliers, commissioners and the (often sidelined) end-users of systems.

Successful healthcare informatics systems

satisfy both clinical and administrative requirements
support front line staff in core clinical and non-clinical activities
defer promises of jetpacks until the simple things (which maybe aren't so simple) are delivered
define required outputs at the outset - "enter everything and we can do anything with it later" never works
assemble the right team to design, implement and train users on systems - not a matter of sheer numbers; thirty people who do not understand requirements are less likely than three well selected people to succeed

Waiting until the 'perfect' system arrives achieves nothing. Small victories are no longer to be missed. Useful low cost scaleable applications are being designed and implemented which satisfy real requirements now! Increasingly versatile messaging and coding standards allow small and large systems to communicate for the benefit of all.

I have a valuable contribution to make and work full time to achieve progress founding Medical Object Oriented Software in 1998.
